His masterpiece novel, The City and the Pillar, published in 1948, was the first mainstream novel in the United States to explicitly approach the subject of homosexuality. Meanwhile his third novel, published in 1948, featured homosexuality (The City and The Pillar), and in 1968 he published Myra Breckenridge, a satirical comedy about a transsexual. When Jim was young he never really dated girls, or had any interest in them. The City and The Pillar follows the life of a very confused boy named Jim. We're inviting the city of Seattle. Patricia Highsmith's The Price of Salt was one of the inspirations for Lolita, and compared to Gore Vidal's The City and the Pillar (written around the same time) was much more daring. Jim and Bob are all American teens who spend their last night of summer together. Photo-1 This book has been on my to read list for a long time, I've been meaning to read it for far too long. The City and the Pillar (1948), written when Vidal was just twenty-three years old, is the story of professional tennis player Jim Willard, a man who never outgrew his boyhood crush on his best friend Bob Ford.
